One of two Ohio Matalco production facilities is being shuttered, according to a release sent in early April.

The Matalco plant, which produces aluminum using re-melting technology, is expected to close June 6.

The 100,000-square-foot facility is located at 4420 Louisville St. NE in Canton.

Seventy-one employees will be affected by the layoffs, but some will be able to transfer into new roles at one of Matalco’s other five U.S. plants.

Affected employees at Matalco in Canton include 12 furnace operators, seven maintenance technicians, engineers, aluminum casters and other positions like humane resources and supervisors.

While the company is closing the Canton plant, the Lordstown Matalco plant on Tod Avenue SW remains operational.

There are plants in Kentucky, Wisconsin and Indiana, as well as Canada.

In North America, Matalco supplies the largest amount of secondary aluminum billet, which is recycled aluminum scrap from car parts or other factories turned into slabs of raw material.

The aluminum slabs are then rolled out or forged in other facilities for a new purpose, like automotive or building construction.
