Youngstown State men, women to host Horizon League tournament doubleheader

The Youngstown State men’s and women’s basketball teams will host a Horizon League doubleheader tonight at the Beeghly Center.

Here is a look at the matchups.

Men’s basketball

Top-seeded Youngstown State hosts eighth-seeded Detroit Mercy in the quarterfinals of the 2023 Barbasol Horizon League Men’s Basketball Championship at 8 tonight.

Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. at Beeghly Center, and the game will be broadcast on 570 WKBN and ESPN+.

With a win the Penguins will advance to the 2023 Barbasol Horizon League Men’s Basketball Championship Semifinals at 7 p.m. March 6 in Indianapolis.

Detroit Mercy enters the game with an overall record of 14-18 and posted a 9-11 mark in Horizon League play. The Titans are coming off an 81-68 win over Purdue Fort Wayne in the first round of the Horizon League Championship on Tuesday. Antoine Davis leads the nation and the Titans with 28.4 points per game and has made 155 3-pointers.

Women’s basketball

Youngstown State’s veteran team will begin what it hopes is a prolonged postseason run as it hosts Northern Kentucky at 5:30 p.m.

The game will be broadcast live on 570 WKBN and ESPN+, and the winner will advance to the semifinals in Indianapolis on Monday.

The Penguins are the fourth seed in the tournament after finishing with a 19-10 overall record and a 13-7 mark against conference opponents during the regular season. NKU is the fifth seed by finishing with a 10-10 mark against league teams.
