The first couple weeks of the high school spring sports season has been greeted by some outstanding accomplishments recorded by area athletes.

But certainly one of the best individual performances was turned in by Austintown Fitch standout softball pitcher Sydnie Watts, who tossed a no-hitter in the Falcons’ 15-0 thrashing of the Howland Tigers in five innings.

The Youngstown area is blessed with outstanding softball teams that have gone deep in the postseason and Fitch could well be one of them again this season with Watts in the pitching circle. She is one of the top sophomore pitchers in Ohio.

The Falcons finished 23-3 last spring and advanced all the way to the Division I regional final before dropping a narrow 5-3 decision to North Canton Hoover, which advanced to the state tournament.

With Watts pitching and many of the Falcons’ top hitters returning from last spring, expect Fitch to be one of the area softball teams in contention for a state berth in late spring.
