Steelers’ Mark Robinson on way to starter

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers have seen the growth in second-year inside linebacker Mark Robinson, and the future appears bright for the young run-stuffer. So much so that one NFL insider believes he’s the team’s next starting linebacker, and someone who will take over the job before too long.

Pro Football Network insider Adam Caplan believes Robinson is on his way to being the Steelers’ next star, and should take over the top of the depth chart by his third season in the NFL.

“Robinson started one game last season (Week 16 at Ravens), and a personnel source said his tape was “really intriguing and explosive,” Caplan writes. “He actually played running back for three years previously at Presbyterian College. But his one season of tape as an inside linebacker was so intriguing that the Steelers clearly felt there was something to develop. Another source said that Robinson’s overall speed and pursuit to the ball carrier has been very impressive since he’s been with the team.”

Robinson impressed during his first preseason game, recording six tackles. Right now, he’s viewed as a rotational piece behind Cole Holcomb and Elandon Roberts, and should be utilized alongside Kwon Alexander plenty this season.

For next year, Alexander is on a one-year deal, and Roberts’ two-year, $7 million contract has just a $1.1 million dead cap next season. Even if they wanted to keep either around, Robinson’s development could put him in a place to compete for the starting job, going from seventh-round pick to start in just three years.
