Youngstown State completes third week of football camp with strong scrimmage
The Youngstown State football team held its last major scrimmage of fall camp on a cool Saturday morning at Stambaugh Stadium.
The offensive and defensive starting units each played a few series before giving way to the reserves who saw a good amount of action.
Scoring touchdowns for the offense were Cephus Harris III (twice), Beau Brungard, CJ Charleston and Daryan Bowling while intercepting passes for the defense were Quincy Lenton and DeVaughn McClinton. Deamontae Diggs returned a blocked pooch punt attempt for a score as well.
On the second series of the workout, Lenton intercepted a Brungard pass on a 3rd-and-8 from the 48-yard line.
Following three unsuccessful drives, the offense found a rhythm as Mitch Davidson engineered a seven-play, 73-yard scoring drive. Davidson connected with CJ Charleston for 27 yards before finding Max Tomczak for 17 yards which converted a 2nd-and-16 situation. On the next play, Davidson found Charleston in the far corner of the end zone for a 21-yard score.
Brungard moved the offense to the 26-yard line highlighted by a 53-yard run by Harris. After the drive stalled, Clay Medvec kicked a 43-yard field goal.
QB Max Blanc connected with Bowling on a 26-yard touchdown pass capping off a four play, 35-yard drive. Two series later, Brungard scored on a 70-yard keeper on third down.
Andrew Lastokva drilled a 32-yard field goal capping off a nine-play drive.
Brungard’s final drive of the scrimmage was a 75-yard, 15-play march. He completed 12-yard passes to Tommie Benn III and Joey Farthing before finding Chase Glover-Rodgers and Nate Damron for 14-yard gains. On second-and-goal from the one-yard line, Harris scored on a run up the middle.
Blanc was the quarterback for the final three drives of the scrimmage. On the last drive, he had passes to Alex McDonald (11 yards) and Blaize Exline (12 yards) which set up a 12-yard scoring run by Harris.
Davidson was 7-of-10 for 90 yards and a touchdown while Brungard was 7-of-15 for 64 yards and Blanc went 8-of-15 for 95 yards and a touchdown.
On the ground, Harris had 12 carries for 102 yards while Caleb Mitchell had nine rushes for 58 yards and Da’Shaun Whatley had six rushes for 42 yards.
