Ryan Day impressed with freshman WR Carnell Tate
Ryan Day had a surprising answer when asked who or what stood out to him during Ohio State’s Fall Camp.
“I will say that Carnell Tate continues to impress,” Day said.
Out of all the talent the Buckeyes have, and with players competing for starting positions on both sides of the ball, to say a freshman receiver has stuck out to Day the most is high praise. Day said Tate has made a positive impression by maintaining an ambitious attitude at camp, even while dealing with an off-the-field, personal matter.
Tate committed to Ohio State in June of 2022 out of Bradenton IMG Academy. A four-star recruit, Tate was also considering an offer from Notre Dame before accepting a spot on the Buckeyes’ roster. As if adjusting from high school football to the faster pace of the college game, Tate also experienced a tragic death in the family in mid-July.
On July 16, Tate’s mother, Ashley Griggs, was a victim of a shooting at West Garfield Park in downtown Chicago (Tate’s home town).
“Our coach and coaches are aware of this terrible tragedy, incredibly saddened and they, along with our players, will support Carnell in any way they can during this most difficult time,” Ohio State said in a statement following news of the shooting.
“To go through what he’s been through this month and just to continue to show up every day and play the way he’s playing, you’re talking about someone who not only has talent, but has maturity at a high level,” Day said. “I’ve been very impressed with Carnell (Tate).”
