Changes abound in this week’s mahoningmatters.com Super 7 football poll, but certainly not at the top, as the Youngstown Ursuline Fighting Irish remain No. 1, the place they have been all season since the poll began six weeks ago.

No. 1: Ursuline

The Ursuline Irish (8-0) of head coach Dan Reardon continue to roll, as they posted a 38-18 win over a Villa-Angela St. Joseph team last Friday night at Stambaugh Stadium. The Irish, who lead the D3 Region 9 computer ratings, host Youngstown Chaney (4-3) Friday.

No. 2: South Range

The South Range Raiders remain a solid No. 2 in this week’s poll.

The Raiders (7-1) continue to get stronger as the season has progressed as evidenced by their impressive 48-14 win over a 5-3 Niles team last week. The Raiders, who lead the loaded Northeast 8 standings, have won six games in a row and will host Louisville (1-7) in an independent game Friday evening.

No. 3: West Branch

West Branch (7-1) retains its No. 3 ranking and is another team that is seemingly playing its best football. The Warriors have won seven straight games and recorded their biggest win to date with a 49-41 Eastern Buckeye Conference win over Alliance last week. In that game, quarterback Beau Alazaus threw for 416 yards and four touchdowns. The Warriors host Carrollton (4-3) Friday, with the winner capturing no less than a piece of the EBC title.

No 4: Poland

Poland (7-1), whose only loss was to powerful South Range in Week 6, has impressively turned back everyone else in the Northeast 8. That includes a 38-35 win over high-scoring Girard on the road last Friday. The Bulldogs will entertain the Lakeview Bulldogs Friday in another Northeast 8 battle.

No. 5: Struthers

The Struthers Wildcats moved up from No. 7 to No. 5 in this week’s poll. The Wildcats (6-2) rolled to a 34-8 win over Youngstown East last week and have won three games in a row. Struthers will host the Niles McKinley Red Dragons (5-3) Friday evening.

No. 6: United Local

United Local (7-1) remains No. 6 in the poll. The Golden Eagles recorded their second shutout of the season when they blanked the Wellsville Tigers 48-0 last Friday. United, which is tied with Lisbon and Southern Local for the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference lead, will host Valley Christian in an EOAC game Friday.

No. 7: Lowellville

The Lowellville Rockets have jumped into the poll after an impressive 35-14 Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference win over a 6-2 Jackson-Milton team last Friday. The Rockets are 7-1 on the campaign and will travel to Atwater Friday night for a MVAC date with the Waterloo Vikings.
