A total of 28 greater Mahoning Valley-area football teams qualified for the first-round of the postseason playoffs last weekend and 12 advanced, including all of the teams in the Mahoning Matters Super Seven poll.

Here are our top 7 picks.

Ursuline

The Youngstown Ursuline Irish (11-0), who have maintained the top spot in the Super Seven poll since it began, remain No. 1. The Irish were impressive in a 42-7 playoff win over New Philadelphia at Youngstown State’s Stambaugh Stadium last Friday. The Irish will host Canfield Friday evening in a second-round postseason game at 7 p.m.

South Range

South Range remains No. 2 in the poll. The Raiders, who are 10-1 and have won nine games in a row, rolled past the Fairless Falcons 43-20 in a D5 postseason battle last week. The defending state champ Raiders will host the Ridgewood Generals in a second-round playoff battle Friday evening at 7.

West Branch

West Branch (10-1) stays at No. 3 in the poll following its hard-earned 33-20 first-round playoff win over Woodridge last Friday. The Warriors will host the Streetsboro Rockets in what should be one of the area’s top playoff games Friday night at 7.

Poland

The Poland Bulldogs (10-1) remain at No. 4 in the poll after a 40-14 D4 playoff win over the East Liverpool Potters last Friday. The Bulldogs will host the Struthers Wildcats in a D4 playoff rematch Friday night at 7.

Struthers

Struthers (8-3) is once again the No. 5 team in the poll following its 21-16 win over a stubborn Girard team in a D4 playoff rematch last weekend. The Wildcats will have another rematch Friday night when they travel to Poland to face the Bulldogs at 7 p.m.

United Local

United Local stays at No. 6 in the poll, after its 24-14 D6 playoff triumph over the Brookfield Warriors last week. The Golden Eagles are 10-1 on the campaign and will entertain Cuyahoga Heights Friday night at 7 in playoff action.

Lowellville

Lowellville stays at No. 7 in the poll and is coming off an impressive 34-0 D7 playoff win over a once-beaten Steubenville Catholic Central team last week. The Rockets (10-1) go on the road Friday in the playoffs to play a Western Reserve team which handed their only regular-season loss back in Week 5.
