Our first mahoningmatters.com Super 7 girls’ basketball poll features several teams which are among the best in the state in their respective divisions.

Records are as of Monday.

Canfield

The Canfield Cardinals, who reached the D2 regional final last season and returned many starters from that team, are No. 1 in the first poll.

The Cardinals are 2-1 on the season and have beaten two of their first three opponents — Alliance and Struthers — by an average of 35 points. Their only loss occurred earlier this week to perennial Pennsylvania state power Kennedy Catholic, 51-48. Kennedy Catholic is a team with multiple state championships in its past.

West Branch

West Branch (3-0) is ranked second and has been impressive.

The Warriors are coming off a 30-point (51-21) win over defending Eastern Buckeye Conference champion Marlington.

They have outscored their first three opponents, 158-65. West Branch has displayed excellent balance, led by Youngstown State commit Sophia Gregory, on offense. The Warriors have also been strong on defense.

Crestview

The unbeaten Crestview Rebels (3-0) are ranked third and just keep rolling.

The talented Rebels are coming off a double-digit win over the Girard Indians.

One of the Rebels’ early-season wins occurred over Springfield, 54-52 on the Tigers’ court. That’s a Springfield team which advanced to the state tournament last season.

Poland

Poland, which should be strong once again in the Division III ranks and one of the top competitors in the Northeast 8, is off to a 2-1 start, with its lone loss coming to the Warren Champion Golden Flashes.

One of Poland’s early-season wins occurred in a 42-41 win over Springfield, a D3 state semifinalist last season.

Boardman

Boardman is off to a 2-0 start with two impressive wins over South Range and Louisville, 55-45.

The Spartans are averaging 58.5 points per game on offense and yielding just 34 points-per-outing on defense.

Boardman will host the Howland Tigers Saturday in a contest featuring two top area teams.

LaBrae

LaBrae is 3-0 on the season with wins over Niles, Girard and Heartland Christian.

The Vikings are members of the Mahoning Valley Conference Gray Division which is loaded with good teams, including Crestview.

The Vikings are averaging 60 points-per-game and giving up 37.3 ppg.

United Local

United Local, which is one of the powers in the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference, is 3-0 on the campaign and 2-0 in the EOAC.

The Golden Eagles have defeated South Range, Lisbon and Valley Christian.

United has outscored its first three opponents by a combined score of 149-51.
