Hot shooting leads Youngstown State to 105-64 win over Detroit Mercy
The Youngstown State men’s basketball team shot 63.3 percent from the field and five players reached double figures in a 105-64 win over Detroit Mercy on Saturday afternoon at Calihan Hall.
Historic shooting day for Youngstown State
The Penguins’ field-goal percentage ranks as the third highest in a single game in program history. It also marked the highest field-goal percentage in a game since Jan. 7, 1982.
Ziggy Reid led the Penguins, who improve to 14-6 overall and 6-3 in the Horizon League, with 22 points while EJ Farmer scored 18 points and Brandon Rush posted 17 points. Rush made five 3-pointers to lead the Penguins, who made a season-high tying 14 3s.
Bryson Langdon and DJ Burns added 12 and 11 points, respectively. Burns also grabbed 13 rebounds.
The Penguins and the Titans battled through five lead changes and three ties through the first 12 and half minutes before the Penguins started to pull away.
Down 21-20 at the 8:12 mark, the Penguins used a 20-7 run over the next five minutes to take a 40-28 lead with 3:47 to go before halftime. Rush buried four 3-pointers and Reid added another to stoke the Penguins spurt.
The Titans trimmed the deficit to six, 44-38, before the Penguins scored the final 11 points of the half to take a 55-38 lead into the lockerroom.
The Penguins made nine 3-pointers in the first half and shot 65.6 percent from the field en route to their 17-point halftime advantage.
Youngstown State opened the second half scoring 12 of the first 16 points to extend the lead to 67-42 with 16:05 remaining.
The Penguins shot 60.7 percent from the floor and made five 3-pointers in the second.
Youngstown State also went 15-for-15 from the free-throw line for the game.
What’s next for Youngstown State?
The Penguins visit IUPUI Jan. 25. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. in Indianapolis, Ind.
