Three teams, including two defending state champions with a combined record of 15-0-1, once again headline this week’s loaded mahoningmatters.com Super 7 softball poll. Here’s a look at this week’s rankings:

Austintown Fitch

Austintown Fitch, which is seeking a third straight Division I state championship this spring, once again tops the poll at No. 1.

The Falcons have been nothing short of overwhelming. They have compiled a perfect 7-0 record against the best competition a team can find.

How dominant have the Falcons been on the diamond so far? In their first seven games of the spring, they have outscored their opponents, 106-27. They sport a team batting average of .325 and have hit 27 extra-base hits.

Canfield

Defending Division II state champion Canfield remains the No. 2 team in the rankings.

The Cardinals are undefeated on the campaign at 4-0-1, including an 8-4 win over arch-rival Poland last week.

The Cardinals have defeated West Branch, Field, Minerva and Poland and tied Louisville. They have scored 42 runs over their first five games, an average of 8.4 runs-per-game.

Warren Champion

Perennial power Warren Champion, which has won nine state championships in its rich history, remains No. 3 in the rankings.

The Golden Flashes, led by Penn State-bound pitcher Gabby Gradishar, are a perfect 4-0 on the season.

Champion has defeated Southeast, Massillon Perry, LaBrae and Jefferson Area while outscoring those four teams, 37-1.

Gradishar has an ERA of 0.00.

Boardman

Boardman jumps up to No. 4 in this week’s rankings.

The Spartans are off to an outstanding 6-1 start to the season.

Boardman has defeated Lakeview, Louisville, Poland, Warren Harding, Akron Hoban and Columbiana and has outscored those squads, 41-9.

West Branch

West Branch, whose only loss this season came at the hands of defending D2 state champ Canfield, jumps into the poll at No. 5 this week.

The Warriors are 4-1 on the season and have won four games in a row, including wins over Girard, Youngstown Ursuline, Howland and South Range.

Hubbard

The Hubbard Eagles are No. 6 in this week’s rankings.

The Eagles have compiled a 5-2 record and have defeated Niles (twice), Mathews, Sharon (Pa.), Poland and Lakeview.

The Eagles have outscored their opponents, 48-24.

Mathews

The Mathews Mustangs hold down the No. 7 spot in the poll.

The Mustangs, who return a veteran team which reached the state semifinals in the small-school division last season, are off to a 3-1 start.

The Mustangs have defeated Lordstown and Fairport Harbor Harding (twice) while outscoring those three teams, 53-0.
