Youngstown native Jason Candle accepts head football coach position at UConn
Former University of Toledo head football coach Jason Candle has accepted the position to be the new head football coach of the University of Connecticut Huskies.
Candle, a Mahoning County native, is a graduate of West Branch High School and the University of Mount Union where he was a standout receiver and member of two Mount Union D3 national championship teams in 2000 and 2001. He has been the head coach at Toledo for 10 seasons.
He is a two-time Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year and led the Rockets to multiple Bowl appearances.
He inked a six-year contract to be the Huskies head coach on Monday.
He leaves Toledo as the winningest coach in Rockets’ history with a record of 81-44 during his decade as their head coach.
He replaces Jim L. Mora as the Huskies’ head coach. Mora recently accepted the head coaching post of the Colorado State Rams.
UConn has won 18 games over the past two seasons.
The Huskies will play the Army Black Knights in the Wasabi Fenway Bowl on December 27.
