The Philadelphia 76ers will enter Wednesday's must-win play-in matchup against the Orlando Magic with their postseason fate still to be determined and facing the first of two potential opportunities to crack the field.

After finishing the regular season with the best seed for the Eastern Conference play-in, the Sixers will face a single-game opportunity to secure the No. 7 seed and advance to the first round, where they'd meet the Boston Celtics.

Philadelphia managed to reach the play-in despite dealing with multiple absences throughout the season, and more often than not, having to lean heavily on guard Tyrese Maxey to carry the offensive load.

Judging by the latest news, the Sixers will need to continue to navigate roster limitations for as long as their season lasts.

That has to do, for the biggest part, with the health of big man Joel Embiid and his status following appendectomy surgery. According to ESPN's Shams Charania, reporting the latest news on Monday, Embiid will not be available against the Magic.

"The Sixers are preparing to be without Joel Embiid for the Play-In Tournament," Charania said. "He's not expected to play during the Play-In Tournament. That's the expectation. Obviously, his status is doubtful (heading) into the playoffs."

Embiid is still recovering, and Charania revealed that he remains in the early stages of that process.

"My understanding is he's in the very early stages of his recovery process from appendicitis," Charania said.

The recovery timeline includes multiple steps before a return to play, so it's fair to assume that Philadelphia will need to advance into the first round, if not further, for Embiid to return at some point later this season.

"He has to recover first, then there will be a separate physical part of the rehab as well," Charania said.

Embiid appeared in 38 games this season, averaging 26.9 points, 7.7 rebounds and 3.9 assists.

Philadelphia hosts Orlando at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
