It took Victor Wembanyama no time to translate his regular-season dominance into the playoffs. The two-time All-Star delivered a statement performance in his postseason debut Sunday, leading the San Antonio Spurs to a 111–98 win over the Portland Trail Blazers in Game 1 of the first-round series.

Wembanyama helped power the Spurs to one of their best seasons in recent memory, finishing as the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference with a 62-20 record behind the Oklahoma City Thunder.

He finished the regular season as an MVP finalist alongside Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Nikola Jokic, averaging 25 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and a league-leading 3.1 blocks per game. With voting still underway, Wembanyama is also the overwhelming favorite for Defensive Player of the Year, and he showed no drop-off under the brighter lights.

The 7-foot phenom came out firing, scoring 21 first-half points to help the Spurs build a 15-point halftime lead. His 21 points set a record for the most points in the first half of an NBA playoff debut since play-by-play tracking began in 1997.

Wembanyama finished with 35 points, five rebounds, and two blocks, surpassing franchise legend Tim Duncan for the most points in a playoff debut in Spurs history. Duncan had scored 32 in 1998 and was in attendance at Frost Bank Center alongside David Robinson.

"I wouldn't say weight," Wembanyama said when asked about following Duncan's legacy. "I feel safe. It feels like if you trip, there are a lot of hands ready to catch you. From day one, it's felt that way."

His 35-point, five-rebound performance also made him the first player in NBA history to reach those numbers in a playoff debut.

"[Wembanyama] has lofty expectations and goals for himself, and being in the playoffs is squarely a part of a lot of that," Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. "So it's good to get the first one and kind of get that experience under your belt."

Wembanyama received strong support across the lineup, with De'Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, Devin Vassell, and Luke Kornet all scoring in double figures. Deni Avdija finished Portland's top scorer with 30 points following a late push, but it wasn't enough to overcome the early deficit.

The Spurs now hold a 1–0 lead in the best-of-seven series, with Game 2 set for Tuesday in San Antonio before the series shifts to Portland for Games 3 and 4.
