'These guys want to win': Section 2 volleyball title secured, Conestoga Valley now seeks postseason glory

May 6-There was no elongated, elaborate celebration.

No dog piles. Nobody got carried off the court on their shoulders. No water buckets were emptied on unsuspecting coaches.

For Conestoga Valley's boys volleyball team, it was simply what has become business as usual this spring. And checking off the first of what the Buckskins are hoping are multiple boxes this season.

CV clinched the outright Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 2 championship on Tuesday night, when the Bucks took down host Lancaster Mennonite 3-0. Set scores were 25-17, 25-17, 25-14, as CV improved to 13-0 in league play and to 15-0 overall.

The Bucks have been, well, fire. As the kids like to say.

CV will go for a perfect regular season ride on Thursday when Cocalico comes to Witmer. The Eagles are in line for second place in the section, and the league playoff invitation that comes with it, so that one has the potential to be a real battle royale.

But first things first. The Bucks have a trophy for their case.

"Winning the section title was the first goal," second-year CV coach Hunter Davis said. "We put the cake in the oven. Now we took the cake out and put some icing on it. Now we hope to put a second layer on top. That's leagues. That's our next goal."

CV hasn't checked off all that many boxes lately. The Bucks pocketed just their third section gold - and first in 22 years - and CV hasn't gone to an L-L League title match since 2004. The Bucks will be making their first trip to the District 3 playoffs since 2023, and CV is 0-6 in district play dating back to 2009.

The last time the Bucks hoisted a district crown was back in 1983, when CV went on to the win the PIAA title. That banner proudly hangs in Rill Gym for all to see.

These Bucks aren't looking that far ahead just yet. But here they are.

"We still have something to prove," Davis said. "Even winning the section, I think there's more in there. Some people might be underestimating us, so we'll play with a chip on our shoulder. We still have something to prove."

CV, Hempfield (12-0) and York Suburban (16-0) are the only undefeated teams in District 3. Along their way to section gold, the Bucks dethroned three-time reigning section champ Manheim Central.

CV swept its season series against the Barons; the Bucks' win in Manheim back on April 7 snapped Central's nifty 42-match L-L League winning streak.

CV got the sweep with a victory over the Barons on April 30.

"They've been the top dogs for a while," CV senior hitter Hans Miller said, "so it feels really good to have the section title. It's great. We were going for the section. That was our plan from the beginning. We knew we could compete with Central and Cocalico. That was our goal from the start."

CV has dropped just three sets all spring; one against Manheim Central in their first matchup, and the Bucks dropped one set apiece in nonleague wins over Penn Manor and Manheim Township back in March.

It's been that kind of a season for CV, which has done practically everything right. The Bucks rarely panic, and they don't take themselves too seriously. They simply grind out every point and play smart volleyball.

Davis is a positive influence on the sideline; he's always up, encouraging his squad with part teaching, part laughing and keeping it loose. CV also flashes a vicious front row, with powerful hitters like Miller, Ashton Judy, Andy Bonhomme, Austin Zimmerman, Caleb Reiff, Jordan Brubaker and Geno Falduts teeing off, and Colson Erb and Micah Sauder cleaning things up in the back.

"We have really good chemistry," Miller said. "The seniors have been playing together since our freshman year. We've been playing together for four years, and that really helps. We have grit and determination and we don't back down. If we're in a close game, we really come together to get that win."

CV also has pinpoint setter Charlie Krcmar, a foreign exchange student from Prague. The beach volleyball standout back home in the Czech Republic has taken the league by storm with his blocking and hitting ability, plus a wicked jump serve. He's been the Bucks' ultimate igniter and glue kid

"He brings consistency," Miller said. "And not just with his setting, but with serving. He's really good at that. He's an all-around really good volleyball player and a great teammate."

That's what CV has been about. Sharing the wealth. Throwing their bodies around to keep a point alive. Blocking up front with authority. One for all and all for one.

The Bucks will truly find out where they stack up when the playoffs get rolling next week.

"We're excited for that," Miller said. "We really haven't had this kind of experience, but we're all ready to go. There's going to be a lot of excitement to get to play in these big matches coming up."

CV will get the Section 1 runner-up - which could be Warwick, Ephrata, Cedar Crest or Penn Manor, pending Thursday's results and likely a tiebreaker - in a league semifinal on Monday at 5 p.m. at Hempfield.

"We mean business right now," Davis said. "This one, winning the section, feels great. It's tough to even describe it. I'm just so proud of these guys. They came in ready to go, and they've worked so hard every single day. Preseason workouts. Everything. These guys want to win."

They have every time out so far this season. And now CV is set to embark on a playoff journey it hopes will produce a second layer - and maybe more. The Bucks are enjoying their cake. And now they want to eat more of it, too.
