Eagles Offense, Jalen Hurts Falling Behind at Minicamp

The Philadelphia Eagles offense is a work in progress under first-year offensive coordinator Sean Mannion this spring.

The Eagles offense will look a little different under Mannion and without wide receiver A.J. Brown, who was traded to the New England Patriots last week. Philadelphia held its minicamp this week, and the offense has three practices to get on the same page before training camp begins in July.

Tim McManus of ESPN suggested the offense didn’t have a strong performance during the three practices of minicamp, falling behind the squad led by defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, in his third season with the Eagles.

Quarterback Jalen Hurts isn’t quite in sync with the new offense and threw an interception to cornerback Riq Woolen that was meant for tight end Dallas Goedert.

“The defense — it is in its third year under coordinator Vic Fangio — looks well ahead of the offense, as it should,” McManus wrote. “The offense is still in the early stages of adapting to a new scheme. Offensive players across the board are talking optimistically about Mannion and his designs, but it will take a while for them to get through the learning curve.

The Eagles are on their fifth offensive coordinator in as many seasons, and that instability could be an issue yet again for the offense as they learn from a new coach. Former NFL quarterback Jay Cutler noted that he had difficulty with the numerous coaching changes he dealt with during his career.

Training camp will be a pivotal time for Hurts and the offense to master Mannion’s system before the regular season. Hurts will enter the regular season facing pressure to be the quarterback the Eagles expected when he signed a five-year contract extension worth $255 million in 2023, or it could be his last season in Philadelphia.
