ATP roundup: Fabian Maroszan reaches Mallorca quarterfinals with upset

Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan ousted fourth-seeded Chilean Alejandro Tabilo 6-2, 6-3 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Vanda Pharmaceuticals Mallorca Championships on Tuesday in Mallorca, Spain.

Marozsan needed just 80 minutes to advance, converting 5 of 6 break points on Tabilo’s serve while saving 8 of 9 on his own serve. Tabilo, playing his first match after a first-round bye, won just 51.5% (34 of 66) of his service points and 33.3% (18 of 54) of his return points.

Top-seeded Italian Luciano Darderi didn’t have the same struggles in his opening match, sweeping Yannick Hanfmann of Germany 7-5, 6-3. No. 5 seed Ignacio Buse of Peru won his opening-round match, beating Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas 7-6 (4), 6-3. He’ll next face Czech Vit Kopriva, who beat Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia and Herzegovina 6-3, 6-4, for a spot in the quarterfinals.

Portugal’s Nuno Borges is also through to the quarterfinals after a 6-4, 7-5 defeat of German wild card Jan-Lennard Struff, setting up a match against Darderi. Serbia’s Mlomir Kecmanovic will be the next opponent for Marozsan after he rallied for a 2-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4 win over Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego. Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov beat Australian qualifier Marc Polmans 6-1, 7-6 (3) to reach the Round of 32.

Lexus Eastbourne Open

No. 6 seed Ugo Humbert of France outlasted Italy’s Mattia Bellucci for a 7-6 (5), 6-7 (1), 6-4 win which took 2 hours and 42 minutes in his opening-round match in the United Kingdom.

Humbert, the only seeded competitor in action Tuesday, overcame a 55% first-serve percentage by converting both break points on Bellucci’s serve while saving 3 of 4 on his own. The only break of the third set closed out the match when Humbert led 5-4. Bellucci had an 11-8 edge in aces.

Two of the three local competitors in action won their Tuesday matches, with British wild card Arthur Fery beating Argentina’s Roman Andres Burruchaga 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 and British qualifier Giles Hussey beating Matteo Arnaldi of Italy 6-4, 6-2 to reach the Round of 16. Lucky loser Hamish Stewart of Great Britain was swept by Argentinian Thiago Agustin Tirante 7-5, 6-2.

In other first-round action, Jensen Brooksby advanced to a Round of 16 match against Humbert with a 7-5, 6-1 triumph over Australia’s Aleksander Vukic, while Germany’s Daniel Altmaier bested Aleksander Kovacevic 6-4, 7-6 (4).
