Alicia Prieto Langarica named this week’s Women Warriors honoree
YOUNGSTOWN — Alicia Prieto Langarica, an associate professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Youngstown State University, is this week's honoree for the Women Warriors initiative.
Prieto Langarica is connected with the community of international students on YSU's campus, serving as a mentor and advocate for students and supporting them during their time in Youngstown.
When YSU was forced to close due to the coronavirus pandemic, she recognized that same community she served would be left without a lifeline, as most international students living on campus had nowhere else to go. Prieto Langarica worked with her network of friends and colleagues to collect food and essential items for the YSU Food Pantry, connecting those students stranded on campus with needed essentials.
Women Warriors is a campaign that recognizes women who are stepping up to lead crisis relief and response efforts in the Mahoning Valley during the COVID-19 outbreak. Each week, the Guiding Circle of the Community Foundation's Fund for Women and Girls will select one woman from submitted nominations to spotlight.
The previous Women Warriors honorees were Pastor Julia Wike, director of Basement Outreach Ministries, Leah Sakacs, lead organizer of the Senior Support Action Group, and Erin Bishop, health commissioner for the City of Youngstown's Health District.
