Ohio reporting 991 new COVID-19 cases, 63 in the Valley

COLUMBUS — According to the latest figures today from the Ohio Department of Health, the state is reporting 840,382 confirmed cases of the new coronavirus, or COVID-19, to date — 991 more than reported Wednesday, including 63 new cases in the Mahoning Valley.

Of the state's total cases, about 33,353 are presumed to be active infections.

The number of COVID-19 hospitalizations across Ohio continues to decrease. Current hospitalizations totaled 908 today, down from 1,268 on Feb. 25.

CASES, DEATHS AND HOSPITALIZATIONS

There have been 19,672 confirmed and probable cases to date in Mahoning County; 14,539 in Trumbull; and 8,218 in Columbiana. There have been 557 confirmed and probable deaths to date in Mahoning County; 428 in Trumbull; and 213 in Columbiana.

Since yesterday's report, there have been 20 new cases in Mahoning County; 33 in Trumbull; and 10 in Columbiana.

Mahoning County's 557 COVID-19 deaths is the eighth-highest among all Ohio's 88 counties, according to the state's COVID-19 dashboard, which presents confirmed cases, hospitalizations and deaths in each county.

Mahoning County has the 11th-highest number of cumulative cases in the state; Trumbull has the 17th-highest; and Columbiana has the 27th-highest.

Ohio is also reporting 144,552 "probable cases" statewide, which is an expanded case definition provided by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Statewide, 51,323 people have been hospitalized to date, 7,255 of whom were placed in intensive care units. There have also been 17,825 deaths to date. Since the state has switched to the Electronic Death Registration System, COVID-19 death tolls will be updated only twice weekly.

TESTING AND RECOVERY

So far this month, 261,089 coronavirus tests have been administered in Ohio, an average of about 29,010 per day. A total of 874,641 tests were administered in February, an average of about 31,237 per day. More than 1.2 million tests were administered in January.

The seven-day moving average for positive tests was 3 percent on Tuesday, which is the same as the all-time low reported in early October. That average percent peaked April 20 at 23.6 percent.

Statewide, 933,756 COVID-19 patients are presumed to have recovered from the virus. That includes 18,544 patients in Mahoning County; 13,595 in Trumbull; and 7,768 in Columbiana. That metric is measured as the number of COVID-19 patients whose symptoms reportedly began more than 21 days ago but who have not died.

As of today, 2,157,525 doses of the coronavirus vaccine have been administered in Ohio, including 48,452 in Mahoning County, 38,603 in Trumbull and 17,767 in Columbiana. Statewide, 71,420 more people have received at least their first dose of the vaccine since Tuesday.
