Ohio’s health care settings will still require masks
YOUNGSTOWN — On the eve of Ohio's sunset of longstanding health orders intended to curb the COVID-19 pandemic, Mahoning County health care organizations are reminding that masks will still be required in health care settings.
"Although we are all encouraged by the ongoing decrease in COVID-19 cases throughout our Valley and country, our responsibility in keeping patients and associates protected remains the top priority," said Dr. Jim Kravec, chief clinical officer for Mercy Health Youngstown, in a Tuesday news release. "Wearing a mask within any hospital facility or care site is vital in helping us maintain a high standard of care."
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in May announced new masking guidance allowing those who've been fully vaccinated against the novel coronavirus to stop masking and social distancing in most settings, while unvaccinated people "should continue to wear a mask, socially distance, avoid large gatherings and whenever possible, be outside for activities and gatherings."
Gov. Mike DeWine last month announced Ohio's health orders are set to end Wednesday (June 2).
"Northeast Ohio hospitals will continue to enforce mask-wearing per CDC guidance," said Ed Muransky, CEO of Southwoods Health. "Extra precautions are necessary to protect vulnerable patient populations. Regardless of vaccination status, the CDC says mask wearing is the safest option for patients, as well as visitors and staff."
Health care settings includes hospitals, nursing homes, doctor's offices and clinics. The CDC also recommends individuals keep the masks on while traveling on public transportation, including airplanes, and when patronizing businesses that require masks.
"It's critically important these two health care systems help clarify this information for our community," said Ryan Tekac, Mahoning County health commissioner. "Our greatest concern is for the health and safety of our residents and we urge everyone who is eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine."
