Local Akron Children’s Hospital completes $31 million emergency room upgrade in Boardman
The Akron Children’s Hospital of Mahoning Valley finished a new emergency room on its Beeghly campus in Boardman.
The Beeghly campus underwent significant upgrades since 2021 in the $31 million expansion project.
Upgrades include six new emergency treatment rooms, two additional behavioral health treatment rooms and a new triage room.
It’ll be ready to open to patients on April 19.
Design input from patients, staff
The new space was expanded from 9,600 square feet to 34,700 square feet.
Comforting artwork hangs on the walls created by students from the Poland, Canfield and Boardman schools, emphasizing the hospital wing was “designed through the eyes of a child with input from patient families and staff.”
Paul Olivier, VP, of Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley Enterprises invited local media members to see all 23 upgraded treatment rooms.
“This expanded emergency department is an investment in the Mahoning Valley community and builds on Akron Children’s commitment to bring care closer to home,” Olivier said. “The generosity of our donors and the input from our patient families, employees, and construction professionals ensure the infants, children, and teens in this area have access to care they deserve.”
Major upgrades
The expansion also includes radiology services that use lower amounts of radiation and easier access for the hospital’s helicopter called Air Bear. There are isolation rooms, a new private behavioral health waiting room, and designated suture rooms.
The new ER is in Building B at 6505 Market St., Boardman.
Lenny Fisher, Farmers National Bank, Florence Simon Beecher Foundation, The Cafaro Foundation, Window World of Youngstown/Moran Family and Jim and Ellen Tressel were listed as major donors on the project.
