Artwork by musician John Mellencamp, son coming to Butler Institute of American Art
You may know John Mellencamp from his music career, but did you know he’s also a skilled painter with multiple pieces on display across the country?
Mellencamp is bringing a collection of his artwork to Youngstown to be displayed at the Butler Institute of American Art starting this Sunday.
Mellencamp has been painting since the 1980’s and shares this passion with his son, Speck Mellencamp. Speck’s artwork will also be on display as part of the father-son show called Bloodline.
“The art of John Mellencamp stretches the American brand of expressionism,” said Louis A. Zona, executive director of the museum. “The Butler is pleased and honored to present Speck’s work alongside John’s at this special time in the Butler’s history.”
Born in 1995, Speck Mellencamp was inspired throughout his childhood by watching his father painting and creating.
He studied at the Rhode Island School of Design as well as in Greece, and now works as the executive director of the Southern Indiana Center for the Arts.
Bloodline: The Art of John Mellencamp & Speck Mellencamp will be on display starting May 7 until July 2.
Admission is free. The art museum is located at 524 Wick Ave. in Youngstown.
