Meijer employees in Warren prepare for store’s opening day

Shoppers frequenting the Howland Commons area will be able to enjoy a new one-stop grocer supercenter opening this week.

The Warren Meijer store director Patrick Hughes opened doors early for special guests and media to get a sneak peek before the soft opening scheduled for May 16.

“This is, from my end, about 14 months ago is when I started this venture, and the reception that we’ve had from the community has been absolutely amazing,” said Hughes.

The 159,000-square-foot store is located at 2100 Niles Cortland Road SE in the Eastwood Mall Complex in Warren. It’s the eleventh Meijer store to be opened in northeast Ohio, according to Hughes.

Hughes took guests through the expansive new store, from frozen foods and snacks to the meat and produce departments, as well as pharmacy and clothing.

“Part of who we are, as a company and as a store, is about giving a one stop shop to the community. And a huge piece of that is having a pharmacy team that can really take care of all of our needs,” he said.

Hughes also presented a $15,000 check from the store to members of Inspiring Minds, a non-profit based in Youngstown helping under-represented students with after-school programs.

“We’ve been so grateful for the warm welcome from area residents so far, and we look forward to providing them another option close to home for groceries and other everyday needs,” said Todd Anderson, Vice President of the Ohio Region for Meijer. “We know that value and convenience are key for our customers, and we look forward to being able to provide both here in Warren and Wooster.”

Hughes said they’ve already hit their goal of hiring 350 new employees, but more jobs will be posted throughout the opening season.
