New bar coming to former O’Donold’s Irish Pub in Youngstown

Hospitality company Penguin Entertainment Group has remodeled the former O’Donold’s Irish Pub and Grill after it closed this March.

They’ve revitalized the building’s architectural design over the spring, creating a new space that “pays homage to local culture and captures the spirit of the community.”

Penguin Entertainment Group announced they’ll be re-opening the building later this year as “Guins,” a college-themed sports bar atmosphere gastropub.

What will be served at Guins?

According to Aria Altman, who works in public relations at Penguin Entertainment Group, Guins is set to open its doors later this year, coinciding with the return of students for the fall semester at Youngstown State University.

After completing a major revitalization project, soon they’ll announce a soft opening, leading up to the gastropub’s grand opening and several other events in the works.

They’ll serve high-quality food and drinks in the sports bar environment perfect for Youngstown natives and those new to downtown.

Preserving history, community on West Federal Street

Before it was O’Donold’s Irish Pub and Grill, the building at 122 West Federal Street was home to a business called The Lemon Grove.

According to Penguin Entertainment Group, the Lemon Grove began in 2009 as a late-night coffee spot and restaurant. Because of its proximity to the university, it grew into a “cultural lynchpin for local artists.”

The Lemon Grove relocated two buildings down to the Knox Building in 2012, still located on the second floor above the Federal.

O’Donold’s Irish Pub and Grill moved in shortly after and stayed in operation on West Federal Street for more than a decade.

This was part of Penguin Entertainment Group’s inspiration behind Guins, to bring a similar artistic expression back and a safe space for community, as well as the Irish-American community.
