Youngstown-founded ice cream corporation marks historic 150th store opening in U.S.

An ice cream and frozen treats corporation founded in the Mahoning Valley recently celebrated its historic 150th store opening in the U.S.

Handel’s Ice Cream started serving ice cream in 1945 in Youngstown and has since expanded to stores across the country.

Since Alice Handel started the business, her recipes have become so popular Handel’s has expanded to 13 states across the country.

Handel’s even received the best ice cream on the planet recognition from National Geographic Magazine.

The newest scoop shop is opening in the greater Altanta area, but there are several Handel’s Ice Cream locations across the Mahoning Valley, including:

  • Austintown: 4800 Mahoning Ave. Austintown
  • Niles: 5140 Youngstown Warren Road in Niles
  • Youngstown: 7485 South Ave. in Youngstown
  • Youngstown: 3931 Handel’s Court in Youngstown

  • Canfield: 1491 Boardman-Canfield Road in Youngstown

  • Columbiana: 310 OH-14 in Columbiana

  • Poland: 6594 Clingan Road in Poland

“Handel’s continues to attract significant interest as one of the fastest growing concepts in the United States,” said Handel’s Ice Cream CEO Jennifer Schuler. “[As] we mark our 150th scoop shop, we’re laying the foundation for continued brand expansion in 2025.”
