Community tradition 57 years in the making

“Fifty-seven years ago, the YMCA of Youngstown recognized the need for a community event in downtown Youngstown to highlight the historical death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and to celebrate the Y’s Christian roots,” said Tom Gacse, the YMCA’s CEO.

Good Friday in Christianity is commemorated as the day Christ was crucified and is a major part of Holy Week.

Holy Week is also the final week during the season of Lent.

“Each year since then, the YMCA has held this special Good Friday Service to bring the community together in prayer, encouragement, worship, and reflection on what Jesus Christ has done for us,” Gacse said.

John Muckridge, president and CEO of the Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley and Youngstown State University graduate in 2005, will lead the service.

Another YSU graduate, Linda Noday of the Rising Star Baptist Church, will provide music for the service. Noday also works at YSU as a coordinator of Accessibility Services.

Tickets for the event are $15 per person.
