U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) recently announced the Economic Development Administration (EDA) is awarding a $1 million grant to Valley Economic Development Partners in Youngstown. This funding will help small, local businesses in Mahoning and Trumbull counties grow and create new economic opportunities.

“Ohio workers can compete with anyone in the world, and this investment will help ensure Mahoning Valley community residents have the resources they need to remain competitive,” Brown said. “This investment will continue to push for investments in Ohio that grow our state’s economy.”

This project is funded under the Assistance to Coal Communities (ACC) initiative, which awards funds to communities impacted by the declining use of coal. ACC projects support economic diversification, job creation, capital investment, workforce development, and re-employment opportunities.

The mission of the EDA is to lead the federal economic development agenda by promoting competitiveness and preparing the nation’s regions for growth and success in the worldwide economy. An agency within the U.S. Department of Commerce, EDA invests in communities and supports regional collaboration in order to create jobs for U.S. workers, promote American innovation, and accelerate long-term sustainable economic growth.

Youngstown Phantoms top Muskegon

Just past the seven minute mark of the first period, the Youngstown Phantoms (34-17-4-1, 73 points) were down 2-0 to the Muskegon Lumberjacks. Youngstown scored five goals in the 13 minutes before the first period buzzer and coasted to a 7-3 win Saturday night at the Covelli Centre.

“Great energy, great enthusiasm all night. I liked how hard we played in the second half of the first period through the end of the game,” said Phantoms Head Coach Ryan Ward. “Overall, a great effort. Good bounce back from last night.”

Muskegon was crashing the cage early, and it paid off for them. Ethan Whitcomb put home a rebound at 5:24 to stake the visitors to an early lead. Teddy Spitznagel put home a rebound at 7:19 for his first career USHL goal, doubling the Lumberjacks’ lead.

“Credit to them, our leadership group, and the whole team for sticking with the game plan,” said Ward. “The next goal after we went down 2-0, the next goal was huge. Obviously, we were able to get that and build from there.”

Mill Creek MetroParks opens roads closed during winter season

The following roads in Mill Creek Park have re-opened to vehicular traffic:

  • Chestnut Hill Drive, between Canfield Road and High Drive
  • Calvary Run Drive, between Belle Vista Avenue and Milton Avenue

Officials urge caution when driving on MetroParks roads as many of these roads are also used by pedestrians and bicyclists. Pedestrians and bicyclists should be reminded to also use caution and be aware of vehicular traffic when on these roads.
