Sherrod Brown promotes rail safety legislation in visit to Lowellville

U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) joined local business owners, rail union workers, and officials in Lowellville to call for swift passage of the Railway Safety Act of 2023 two months after the devastating Norfolk Southern train derailment in East Palestine.

“Railroad company lobbyists spent years fighting every effort to make our railroads safer, cutting more than 30 percent of their workers in less than 10 years, and now Ohioans are paying the price,” Brown said. “It shouldn’t take a train derailment for elected officials to put partisanship aside and work together for the people we serve – not corporations like Norfolk Southern.”

Ohio group warns about new synthetic opioids found in the state

The Ohio Narcotics Intelligence Center released a public safety bulletin advising Ohioans of dangerous substances the veterinary sedative xylazine and/or new synthetic opioids (NSOs).

The bulletin coincides with the emergency of xylazine as a Schedule III controlled substance by Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine and the State of Ohio Board of Pharmacy.

The emergency order was prompted by intelligence gathered as part of an early detection process developed by ONIC in partnership with RecoveryOhio, the Board of Pharmacy, and local drug toxicologists and chemists. The early detection process, which includes the proactive collection of reports from Ohio’s criminal justice system and forensic labs, allows ONIC to identify, analyze, and triage information on emerging drugs of abuse that are not controlled substances.

Valley Foods Inc. set for upgrades after state direct loan

State Rep. Al Cutrona (R-Canfield) announces the State Controlling Board on Monday approved a total of $314,925 for Valley Foods Inc. The funds derive from the Regional 166 Direct Loan Program.

“This project approval is going to help them with upgrades to improve efficiency for their meal kits and ultimately will add and retain jobs for the business,” Cutrona said.

The project approval will upgrade the pouching capacity for the Meal, Ready-To-Eat (MRE) type products needed to fulfill contracts for the Department of Defense and other entities.

Cutrona backed the previous state budget bill, which included support for the loan program. The Regional 166 Direct Loan Program provides low-interest loans for land and building acquisition, construction, expansion or renovation, and equipment purchases for eligible businesses.

Valley Foods Inc. prepares and packages American-made meal kits for the military, National Guard, disaster relief, summer school programs, and other food service customers.

Due to the project, four jobs will be created, and another 77 retained.
