Youngstown City School District officials commemorated two new student playing fields on March 28.

East High School hosted a ribbon cutting for the new turf baseball and softball fields constructed at the campus.

The students played their first game of the baseball season against Chaney High School immediately after breaking ground on the new field.

East alum Kenneth E. Smith, who also played in Major League Baseball with the Atlanta Braves, returned to throw the first pitch to honor the new field.

The East High School Golden Bears won the game with a final score of 10-9.

“The baseball field aligns with Youngstown City School’s efforts in strengthening our overall programs; athletics is one of those components in the process,” said Superintendent Justin M. Jennings. “The Youngstown Board of Education and Youngstown City School District are excited to bring these opportunities to our scholars. (These fields) has been a long time coming. We look forward to a great future for our players, families, and community.”

East High School is located at 474 Bennington Avenue.

The Motz Group of Cincinnati constructed the turf field. The same company installed the new artificial field turf at the historic Rayen Stadium.

The baseball and football fields are part of the District’s plans to develop new athletics facilities, including a middle school football field at Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School, and track at Chaney High School.
