Spring BFA Exhibition showcases work from graduating art students at Youngstown State University
Students hoping to become graphic designers, painters and artists culminated their time in the Youngstown State University Department of Art with one project that would be on display at the McDonough Museum of Art.
Eighteen students graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts could put their work on display at the museum for two weeks.
According to Claudia Berlinski, director of the museum, the students have been developing skills for the last four years and worked on one visual art project each during their last semester to represent all they’ve learned.
“It’s a great opportunity for the general public to see some exciting work,” she said. “These senior projects - the students pour their hearts into it and bust their butts to get it done and make it the best they can be. So most people come in (and are) impressed with the quality and the level of their concept and execution of the work.”
The students were honored on April 21 with a reception. Their work will be on display until May 6, commencement day.
The exhibition is free and open to the public.
The museum is open from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday.
According to Berlinski, the community has other opportunities to visit the McDonough Museum.
Stop by 10 a.m.-noon May 6 to participate in a free collage workshop. Be sure to email the museum by May 3 to register.
Then later this summer, pieces created by alums working in the arts are chosen to be put on display at the museum.
“Most of the people in the alumni show are still living in the area,” she said. “So this year, we had Bill McLean, who is affiliated with the Trumbull Art Gallery and many other arts organizations in the area. He recently won an award from the Ohio Arts Council for his advocacy for the arts. So we’re pretty excited about that. I think the alumni like coming back and hopefully running into some classmates and preparing a piece of work for the show.”
