How Mercy Health approached Earth Day

If patients have mild symptoms or are asymptomatic, they should perform an at-home COVID-19 test or visit a walk-in clinic for testing, instead of flooding emergency rooms, Mercy Health’s Chief Clinical Officer Dr. James Kravec said.

Earth Day was observed April 22 with the theme of “Investing in Our Planet.” In support of this observance, Mercy Health is looking to reduce our carbon footprint in the Mahoning Valley with the implementation of a variety of green initiatives.

In 2021, Mercy Health discontinued the use of Desflurane in anesthesiology due to its harmful impact to the environment. Switching to alternate anesthetics that have fewer impacts on carbon emissions has kept approximately 1,671 metric tons of CO2 from being released into the atmosphere.

Mercy Health has also instituted initiatives to boost cardboard and battery recycling, reduce landfill waste, increase the use of sustainable materials and reduce the use of certain single use instruments where possible. Mercy Health – Youngstown also has a Green Team, which is a multidisciplinary team focused on identifying opportunities to bolster sustainability efforts.
