It’s a clean-up project to kick off Earth Day festivities in partnership with Youngstown Cityscape, a non-profit development organization aiming to revitalize the downtown Youngstown landscape.

About 100 Choffin students are planting native steep slope seeds, spreading straw on the hillside adjacent to their school’s campus on Wood Street downtown, and cleaning up the general area, including the YMCA parking lot.

They divided into two shifts, the first group of students raking, weeding and cleaning the Choffin campus and surrounding area from 7:45 a.m. until 10:30 a.m.

Then the next group will work at noon and finish at 2 p.m.

Home Depot provided the students with tools like gloves.

How to get involved

Adam Lee, program director for Youngstown CityScape, wants the community to know how to get involved in April events to commemorate Earth Day.

Join Youngstown CityScape and other community organizations at 8:30 a.m. on April 25 at Wick Park to help plant trees throughout the park.

Then, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on April 28, join the volunteers for beautification and clean up of the Mahoning Commons neighborhood.

Youngstown CityScape at Briel’s is also starting a Nature’s Blossoms Florists pop-up shop running from April 28 through May 13 from 10 a.m.- 5 p.m., and Mother’s Day Sunday, May 14, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at the greenhouse location on 23 S. Belle Vista Ave.
