Mahoning Valley wakes up to cold temperatures, rain to start May. Snow possible later Monday
According to the National Weather Service, residents across northeast Ohio are waking up to cold temperatures and accumulations of rain and thunderstorms to begin the month of May.
Doug Kahn, who works with the National Weather Service in Cleveland, said the high for Monday is 40 degrees.
He explained it was due to an upper-level low cold front coming into the region, also called a cold drop.
“This can happen this time of year; it’s not uncommon at the end of spring, late April, and early May for these upper-level lows to be sort of stalled over the lower Great Lakes region. Then that results in a lot of cloud cover, which is what you’re seeing, but also some areas of rain showers possibly enhanced from a relatively warmer Lake Erie,” Kahn said. “Lake Erie temperatures are right around 50 degrees. So that, combined with the colder air aloft, saw the result in some of our more rainy and cloudy weather as well.”
Temperatures are projected to drop to the 30s Tuesday evening when the National Weather Service says light snow is possible.
Meteorologists anticipate seeing the temperatures warming up by late Wednesday, then hit 70 by the end of the week.
