Mill Creek MetroParks Executive Director Aaron Young says there is a difference between targeted shooting and deer hunting.

Young responded to Youngstown Law Director Jeff Limbian’s recent letter to the park system warning of legal action if deer were hunted in Mill Creek MetroParks property in the city.

“Deer culling via targeted removals/sharpshooting is the proposed method of population control within the City of Youngstown, but until the issue of legal discharge of a firearm is reconciled, we have committed to focusing on areas outside of the City of Youngstown as we begin the program this Fall,” Young said via email to a request for comment from Mahoning Matters.

Young claimed that deer hunting wasn’t part of the management plan proposed in Youngstown.

In the email, Young referred to the park’s statement on its website about white-tailed deer.

Young didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment seeking a specific reference to the difference in strategy between deer hunting and a targeted management plan on the website.
