The Youngstown State University Foundation has appointed two new members to join the Board of Trustees.

Meet the two newest additions to the foundation’s Board of Trustees. Their three-year terms began in May.

Alexa Sweeney Blackann

Alexa Sweeney Blackann is carrying the torch of her family name and continuing a family tradition.

Her grandfather, Robert Sweeney, served as a YSU Foundation Trustee from 1992 to 2001. Then her father, Doug Sweeney, was a YSU Foundation Trustee from 2014 to 2023.

Sweeney Blackann is heavily involved in community organizations and giving back.

She’s a board member of the Youngstown Warren Regional Chamber and the YSU Foundation, BRITE Energy Innovators, the Better Business Bureau, and the Akron Children’s Hospital Foundation.

She’s the most recent president of Sweeney Chevrolet and Sweeney Buick GMC in Youngstown.

According to the foundation, the Sweeney family has donated over $1 million to YSU and established the Patricia McGovern Sweeney Professorship in Nursing.

Kevin Helmick

Kevin Helmick is the president and CEO of Farmers National Bank Corp., working with the company for the last 25 years.

According to the YSU Foundation, during Helmick’s tenure as CEO, Farmers has seen a total shareholder return of more than 156 percent and banking asset growth of more than 350 percent.

Helmick is also a board member for Akron Children’s Hospital Foundation, the Better Business Bureau and now the YSU Foundation.
