Animal Welfare League “completely overwhelmed”
According to Facebook, staff members at the Animal Welfare League in Trumbull County are “completely overwhelmed” trying to care for just over two hundred animals at the shelter.
The shelter takes in animals living in inhumane conditions where they have lack of sufficient food, water, shelter and veterinary treatment.
They’re asking for help from the community after rescuing 27 cats and a dog from a home in Niles last weekend, according to Facebook.
An AWL officer found 28 animals living in “horrible conditions.”
Responding staff members also had concerns about the elderly homeowner living there and notified Adult Protective Services. Humane agents are on duty Monday – Friday 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Caring for 205 animals
These 28 animals were brought to AWL Trumbull County Saturday evening, bringing the number of animals under AWL care to 205.
Over two hundred animals each need to be “fed, watered, medicated, socialized...need spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, flea and tick prevention, microchips and much more.”
In addition, AWL has puppies in isolation recovering from Parvovirus and a litter of kittens moved to isolation for suspected ringworm.
Not only do parvo and ringworm require treatment and medication, but they are also highly contagious and require special cleaning and care protocols to ensure they do not spread to other animals (or in the case of ringworm to humans) in the shelter.
The staff members wrote online that they’re working overtime to treat all the animals:
“But we are tired, emotionally and physically...we are completely overwhelmed. We cannot help but ask ourselves ‘When will it stop?’”
How you can help
AWL is located in Vienna and is funded by private donations from individuals, foundations and corporations.
One way to help is donating unwanted household items like electronics or books to The Menagerie by AWL.
They’ll be able turn unwanted stuff into life-saving funding for the shelter.
You can also donate supplies and much-needed items like puppy food.

Mahoning County Dog Warden
The Mahoning County Dog Warden has also updated residents on their need for support on Facebook:
“Not only are we running out of kennels and cages to put our stray dogs in, we are rapidly running out of food. We are getting everything from small puppies to seniors. If you are able to donate food for these pups it would be greatly appreciated. With the summer months and the Fourth of July around the corner our bad situation will likely get much worse.
Here’s what they’re looking for at the dog warden: Adult chicken and vegetable food, puppy food, small dog food, canned food for dogs, canned pumpkin, Easy Cheese, Reddi Wip, plush toys, Soft and Chewy Milkbone Treats and pill pockets as well.
“Thank you as always for loving our pups. We as a staff also value your moral support in times like these. It’s hard on the whole community,” staff members wrote on Facebook.

The Mahoning County Dog Warden has paused volunteering while they care for 75-85 dogs dealing with kennel cough and pneumonia.
