According to the Mahoning County Dog Warden’s Facebook page, volunteering has been stopped for the remainder of the week due to illness among the animals.

There are two dogs at the county dog pound currently being treated for pneumonia.

Many are also being treated for kennel cough, and the post said it is spreading rapidly among the more than 80 dogs.

“In an effort to stop the spread within our building and to our volunteer’s dogs, we need to stop volunteering until we get this under control” while veterinarians test the animals for infections, the post said.

Message for county dog owners

The Mahoning County Dog Warden also urged pet owners to invest in tags and chips and encourage others to adopt.

Here’s their message:

“We are a county dog pound. We are not a no kill shelter. In recent years we have been doing our absolute best to properly evaluate the stray dogs that come in —to be put up for adoption.

We have been giving dogs with certain challenges extra time to come around and to actually have a chance at finding a home. We have done everything in our power to never have to euthanize a dog to make room for another stray dog that is coming in through the door. We can no longer operate that way. We and the dogs do not have the luxury of time or space. This seems to be our new normal and it is devastating.

So once again we are making this plea. Put tags on your dogs. Microchip your dogs. Spay and neuter your dogs. Contain your dogs to your property. Make a lifetime commitment to your dogs. AND please rally and find our dogs adopters —and find them rescues with available fosters —for the 85-plus dogs in our care that have done nothing wrong and don’t deserve to be here. PLEASE.”
