MIKE BROWN: Some Mahoning Valley-area schools changing basketball divisions next season
The Ohio High School Athletic Association announced its basketball divisional cutoff numbers for 2023-2024 season recently.
Most Mahoning Valley schools will remain in their current divisions.
However, a handful of schools from Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties will be changing divisions, following the release of the new enrollment numbers, which also include Competitive Balance figures.
Youngstown Ursuline girls’ basketball team moving up
In Mahoning County, the Youngstown Ursuline girls’ basketball team will move up from Division III to Division II in the 2023-2024 season. The Irish have an enrollment number of 209, including Competitive Balance figures. The OHSAA numbers for Division II girls’ basketball programs in 2023-2024 is 191-318 girls.
Howland boys’ basketball team moving down
In Trumbull County, the Howland boys’ basketball team will move down from Division I to Division II. The Tigers have an enrollment number of 331 boys. The D2 cutoff numbers for 2023-2024 are 193-345 boys.
Mineral Ridge girls’ basketball team will be in a higher division
Also in Trumbull, the Mineral Ridge girls’ basketball team will be in a higher division in 2023-2024. The Rams will bump up from Division IV to Division III. Mineral Ridge’s enrollment number, including Competitive Balance, is 117. The numbers for Division III for the upcoming season are 113-190.
Beaver Local girls’ basketball team will move up
In Columbiana County, the Beaver Local girls’ basketball team will move up from Division III to Division II this winter. The Beavers have an enrollment number of 191, which is right at the cutoff. The cutoff for Division II is 191-318.
