Celebrate students at Summer Manufacturing Camp showcase this weekend
To celebrate a successful summer camp, organizers at the Summer Manufacturing Institute will hold two public events this weekend.
What is the Summer Manufacturing Institute?
It’s a two-week camp for Mahoning and Trumbull County students from fifth to eighth grade focusing on manufacturing technology in the Mahoning Valley.
This year, over 40 students learned about public safety for pedestrians, bicyclists and the overall development of city roads and businesses.
One of the engineering challenges this year required students to implement engineering and urban design principles through a safe street demonstration.
When are the events?
There are two events to check out to celebrate the end of camp and the student’s accomplishments.
Students will showcase their summer knowledge Friday with the safe street demonstration and a “Toast to Elm Street,” open to everyone at 5-8 p.m. on Elm Street on the north side of Youngstown. Enjoy live music by DJ Chip Banks.
You’ll also be able to check out the “Line Up on Elm Street” featuring Dalia’s Caribbean Kitchen, Culturehouse Coffee Company and A Fresh Wind Catering and Social Media Cafe.
Then return to Elm Street on Saturday for the Northside Market from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.
Both events spotlight temporary safe street improvements developed by the students, which include a creative crosswalk and the implementation of bike lanes.
Mercy Health’s Stepping Out Program will also host a free fitness class at 9 a.m. and a social stroll to Wick Park at 10 a.m. on Saturday during the market.
Other sponsors include America Makes, Youngstown Cityscape, the Healthy Community Partnership, Eastgate Regional Council of Governments,the Economic Action Group, the Boys and Girls Club of Youngstown, the City of Youngstown Department of Parks and Recreation, and CycWard Bike Shop.
