MATT LEWIS: Cleveland Browns unveil white helmets
The Cleveland Browns, the lone “vanilla” NFL franchise that doesn’t carry a logo on its helmets, raised the bar in plainness for 2023.
The team introduced white helmets to be part of their alternative uniform for the upcoming fall season and, like their counterparts in college ball – Penn State – has scheduled three “white out” home games: Week 2 on Sept. 18 vs. the Steelers for Monday Night Football; Sunday, Oct. 15 in Week Six against Jed York’s San Francisco 49ers and for a Thursday Night “Prime” game on Dec. 28 vs. Aaron Rodgers and his N.Y. Jets.
The Browns first wore white helmets during their first six years of existence, four of which were when they were part of the All-American Conference.
They also wore white helmets in 1950-51 in the NFL before fully adopting their current plain orange helmets with the stripes in 1952.
In 2021, Cleveland wore white throwback alternate uniforms inspired by the team’s original 1946 look to mark the club’s 75th anniversary.
