AAA expects more people to travel over Labor Day before summer comes to an end
According to AAA, more people will hit the road or the sky at the end of the week for Labor Day travel excursions.
Bevi Powell, senior vice president of AAA East Central, said the number of people with Labor Day weekend travel plans is higher this year than last year.
“As summer ends and school begins, many families are taking advantage of Labor Day weekend to head out of town for a few days,” said Powell. “The long holiday weekend provides another opportunity to travel, whether planning a road trip to visit family and friends or deciding to take that dream trip to Canada or even Europe.”
International trips
Vancouver, Rome and London are the most popular international destinations over Labor Day weekend.
Travelers are also hopping on flights to Dublin, Paris and other parts of the U.K. for the extended weekend.
AAA data shows international flight bookings are up 44%, while domestic bookings are up 4%.
International trips, cruises and cooler-weather destinations are most popular. Canada is another popular destination among Americans for Labor Day excursions.
Road trips
Drivers taking road trips this Labor Day weekend can expect slightly higher gas prices compared to last year.
According to AAA, gas prices all over the U.S. spiked this summer because of tight supply and the high cost of oil.
While the national average has been above $3.80 for most of August, the average was slightly lower on Labor Day 2022 at $3.78.
Best and worst times to hit the road
According to INRIX, the busiest time on the roads during the extended Labor Day weekend will be from 2-6 p.m. Thursday.
It’ll also be busy for travelers between 11 a.m. and 9 p.m. on Friday.
