Mahoning River survey asks what communities want to see in communities along the river
The Mahoning River is known throughout the Mahoning Valley as the River of Opportunity with a significant impact on the rich, local history of steel industry.
History of the Mahoning River
Residents have grown up along the Mahoning River which flows through all or part of seven counties including Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana.
According to Eastgate Regional Council of Governments, the river was dammed to “provide cooling water for the big steel industries that settled along the Mahoning River.”
Many of the dams have been removed, but Mahoning River stakeholders want to continue to revitalize the area after the steel industry manufacturers have left.
Residents in Newton Falls and Sebring receive their drinking water from the Mahoning River, and there are several popular reservoirs off the river that are used for recreation.
Locals and tourists travel to Berlin Lake, Lake Milton, M.J. Kirwin Reservoir, Deer Creek Reservoir and Dale Walburn Reservoir for fun in the summer sun.
Mahoning River survey closes Sept. 1
Residents can be a part of the Mahoning River Corridor Revitalization Plan as organizers want to know: What would you like to see in communities along the river?
According to the Eastgate Regional Council of Governments, the Appalachian Community Grant Program provided the funding for the revitalization.
They’re collectively focused on expanding recreational amenities, connecting trails and overall revitalization in the heart of river communities -- and they want to hear from the people living in the communities.
Share your thoughts on the future of the Mahoning River by completing the survey online; it will take around five to ten minutes to complete and all responses are anonymous.
