When you start waking up with a stuffy nose, sore throat or just feeling extremely tired, how do you know if these are cold or flu symptoms?

The Columbiana County General Health District posted a side-by-side guideline to help families differentiate between symptoms of cold and flu.

Signs and symptoms

When you have a cold, common symptoms come on gradually. When you have the flu, you’ll start feeling symptoms abruptly.

The most common symptoms for the flu include a fever, body aches, headaches and chills.

When you have a cold, fever, aches and chills aren’t as common.

If you’re always fatigued and exhausted, that’s probably a symptom of the flu.

Main differences between cold and flu

According to the Cleveland Clinic, the main difference between the cold and flu is that patients are more likely to have a fever and chills with flu.

Overall, the flu also causes body aches and more severe symptoms than a cold.

Adults don’t usually get a fever with a common cold.

If you have questions about symptoms and flu vaccines, get in touch with your primary care provider.
