Gas prices in Ohio have fluctuated this year but seem to be “defying the odds” so far and staying consistent in some states after Labor Day weekend travel excursions are over.

According to experts like AAA spokesperson Andrew Gross, today’s national average of $3.80 is two cents less than a month ago. The average price is also four cents less than in 2022.

“Pump prices appear to be defying the odds at the moment, despite the surge in the cost of oil,” said Gross. “This uneasy balancing act may last until we get beyond hurricane season and its threats to Gulf Coast oil and gas production and refining.”

The national average price for a gallon of gas is $3.80, having dipped a bit following the long Labor Day weekend, two cents lower than last week’s average.

Today’s average price for a gallon of gas in the U.S. is also 12 cents more than it was a year ago.

Since last week, many states, including Ohio, have seen drops or increases in average gas prices, according to AAA.

These states include Michigan (−7 cents), Wisconsin (−7 cents), California (+6 cents), Nevada (+6 cents), Delaware (−6 cents), Ohio (−6 cents), Washington, D.C. (−6 cents), Maryland (−6 cents), South Carolina (−5 cents) and Tennessee (−5 cents).

According to reports, the increase in some states comes after a recent uptick in the price of oil internationally, settling around $84.72 per barrel.

Specifically in Saudi Arabia and Russia, leaders agreed to extend their voluntary global oil production cuts through the end of this year.

AP News reports say this could increase inflation and the cost for more motorists at gasoline pumps soon.
