Woman charged with felonious assault after driving car through Youngstown front yards
Youngstown police officers took one woman into custody for fighting and trying to hit people with her car.
YPD officer Juan Fornore reported he was responding to a separate call Wednesday after 5 p.m. near Jean Street and Ivanhoe Avenue when he heard gunshots.
As he arrived on the scene, he saw a black sedan driving through a front yard on Ivanhoe Avenue followed by a man on foot.
The driver, Cicelia Mayfield, exited the car and reported to Fornore she was being shot at by the man chasing her car.
Fornore placed the man under arrest, who is named Derrick Gabriel.
This is what Mayfield initially told the police officer; as Fornore placed Gabriel under arrest, Mayfield began fighting another person on the scene ten feet from the cruiser.
Reports say after Fornore ordered the two women fighting to separate, neighbors told him a different story of what they saw happen.
Identifying the aggressor
Witnesses “identified Mayfield as the aggressor” and claimed she was trying to hit people with her car, causing serious injuries to one woman.
Hearing the other side of the story and seeing corroborating evidence on the bumper of Mayfield’s car, Fornore placed Mayfield under arrest and let Gabriel go.
Mayfield was taken to Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office and charged with felonious assault.
The unidentified victim was transported by emergency personnel for treatment at Mercy Health St. Elizabeth Hospital in Boardman.
Police aren’t sure who fired shots at Mayfield’s car. Officers recovered two spent nine millimeter shell casings in a driveway on Ivanhoe.
None of the witnesses or neighbors could identify where the shots came from, but police did locate four bullet holes in Mayfield’s car.
Mayfield was charged but has not been found guilty yet; she is claiming it was a mutual fight.
