Youngstown City Schools building next-level music workshops through Ohio grants
According to Youngstown City School District, they’ve received several state grants to hold next-level music enrichment workshops.
It’s called the Music Artist Development Workshops program for students taking music classes in kindergarten through eighth grade.
The Ohio Arts Council awarded YCSD with nine grants totaling $39,800 for the music and arts program.
“Youngstown City Schools is extremely grateful to Governor DeWine, Lieutenant Governor Jon Husted and members of the Ohio General Assembly for acknowledging the importance of public funding for the arts through the state budget,” said Superintendent Jeremy Batchelor.
With the funding, artist and educator Demetrius Thomas is teaching students about music, rhythm, culture and hip-hop in their weekly classes.
“Our district is full of talented scholars who need the magic of the Arts to unlock their potential to achieve their dreams. The generous grant will afford our scholars to have that creative outlet to express themselves and gain valuable communications skills,” said Y-STEAM supervisor Bridget Lambright-Tammelleo.
Who is Demetrius Thomas?
Outside the classroom, Thomas is a hip-hop recording artist who goes by the name Nova the Rebel. He brings “his experiences from performing in Cuba and Mozambique to increase every scholar’s awareness about their culture’s impact on the world.”
He’ll be returning for another year to run workshops for Music Artist Development with a focus on hip-hop.
During workshops, students taking music or band class are also learning vocabulary, articulating and calculating beats, developing sentences, and working effectively with others.
According to the district, Thomas will work with scholars in K-8 for three days during all four quarters.
