Police departments in the area worked with Ohio State Highway Patrol to safely handle a high-speed chase through downtown Youngstown.

A man was arrested last Wednesday evening for driving erratically and failing to pull over when being pursued by police.

How did the chase start?

Reports from the Youngstown Police Department say police pursued a BMW traveling over 90 miles per hour through downtown and Youngstown State University campus streets.

According to Youngstown police reports, the officers originally tried to pull the BMW over for over-tinted windows while it was driving north on Market Street.

The driver of the BMW, later identified as Thomas Kusic, fled the scene, weaving in between cars on Market Street.

Officers called for assistance from Ohio State Highway Patrol helicopter. They decided to end their pursuit of the vehicle to keep pedestrians and other vehicles traveling downtown safe.

The OSHP helicopter followed the Kusic as he drove through downtown, on to Wick Avenue through YSU toward the northside.

Reports say “while going through YSU campus, the BMW was observed still driving at high rates of speed and still disregarding traffic control devices, putting college students in harm’s way.”

Kusic struck a mailbox, damaging the property and his vehicle, according to police.

Where did the police chase end?

Reports say police soon stopped the BMW in the dead end of Country Club Drive.

Kusic and two passengers got out of the car and fled the scene on foot into a field nearby. Officers with Liberty Township Police assisting YPD arrived on scene.

They found and arrested Kusic, who identified himself as the driver.

The two passengers were released and cleared of any injuries.

Kusic had an active warrant for traffic offenses.

Now he faces additional charges including tinted glass, driving under suspension and failing to comply with police officer’s orders.
