Here’s what happened this week in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court:

  • Javontai Harris, 22, Sweetbriar, Warren, pleaded guilty to a third-degree felony of having weapons while under disability and will be sentenced by Judge Sean O’Brien after undergoing a background investigation by probation officers. He could get up to three years in prison. The plea hearing on Wednesday off set a jury trial that was scheduled to begin Nov. 16. Harris was arrested after a shots fired call investigated by Warren police in the 600 block of Fairfield NE. Officers chased the suspects and Harris was arrested with a Glock27 .40 caliber gun on his person, prosecutors said. Harris was prohibited from carrying firearms because of a 2019 cocaine possession conviction. As part of this plea deal, Harris agreed to forfeit the Glock27 firearm. Harris remained free until sentencing after posting a $15,000 bond.
  • Sydney V. Peterman, 21, of Reeves Road NE, Warren, pleaded guilty to a fifth-degree assault charge. Peterman who could face from six to 12 months in prison, will be sentenced by Judge O’Brien after undergoing a background report. The case involved an incident at the Trumbull County Jail on Aug. 24, 2023 where Peterman struck a jail correction officer twice in the face. Peterman on Wednesday also pleaded guilty in another assault case before Judge Cynthia Rice.
  • Zalyn Bess, 21, of North Road, Niles, pleaded guilty to three misdemeanor counts of attempted assault. Bess will be sentenced after undergoing a background investigation conducted by probation officers. The case involved a disturbance at the Trumbull County Jail where Bess struck one guard on the side of the head and took swings at two others, prosecutors said.
  • Earlier this week, a Trumbull County jury found Mariah Reid, 29, of Paige NE, Warren, not guilty of a fourth-degree assault. Reid was accused of biting a police officer during an arrest earlier this year, however, jurors did not find the evidence proved the state’s case beyond a reasonable doubt. The one-day trial was held in Judge O’Brien’s courtroom.
