The Catholic Diocese of Youngstown is investigating some irregularities in the financial records at two Youngstown Diocese parishes.

According to the Diocese of Youngstown, they’ve been investigating the financial records of two northeast Ohio reverends: Rev. Maciej “Matthew” Mankowski and Rev. Chris Henyk.

The two reverends have resigned from their positions in their parishes.

The investigation began in December of 2022.

There were concerns at Saint Joseph Parish in Alliance, where Mankowski had been working from 2011-2012, as well as his current parish, Divine Mercy Parish in Massillon.

Independent auditors were called in to take a look at the two parish’s records.

Mankowski’s financial records were “inconsistent” and “constituted serious breaches of Diocese stewardship standards.”

In July, Mankowski resigned as pastor of Divine Mercy Parish.

The investigation into Divine Mercy Parish brought up some evidence that another reverend was helping Rev. Mankowski.

According to the Diocese, they began investigating Rev. Henyk, pastor of Little Flower Parish in Canton.

The Diocese said Rev. Henyk worked with Rev. Mankowski and failed to cooperate with auditors and investigators.

Rev. Henyk agreed to resign from Little Flower.

The Rev. David J. Bonnar, Bishop of Youngstown, appointed Rev. Patrick Manning as to come to Little Flower Parish as a temporary administrator.

An update on the investigation and Father Henyk’s resignation was announced to Little Flower, Divine Mercy and St. Joseph parishioners at Masses this weekend.

Now the Diocese is turning over all financial records to law enforcement officials

“I want to emphasize that, at this time, we have no evidence of financial irregularities at Little Flower Parish,” said Bishop Bonnar. “We have taken this step with Father Henyk to allow the investigation to proceed and to provide Little Flower with a priest who can fully focus on serving the parish. Now, out of an abundance of caution, we will be conducting a full audit at Little Flower as well.“
