Police search for suspects in home invasion, burglary in Youngstown
Youngstown Police Department is investigating a home invasion and burglary at 8:30 p.m. Monday.
Arriving on scene
Officers were sent to a house on Oak Street for a burglary in progress; according to the caller, their door was kicked in.
One of the officers reported that once he got to the address, he saw a tall figure dressed in all black running from the back of the house. The officer said the figure then ran toward a large shed in the backyard.
Another YPD officer arrived and they followed the suspect into the backyard.
As the two officers got to the garage, they heard someone say, “Over here! Go this way,” according to reports.
The voice came from where they saw the suspect running toward a wooded area near McKelvy Lake and they followed.
Joined by a third YPD police officer, reports say they ran southwest toward the lake bank but couldn’t find the suspects at that time. They got more information from the property owner, and reports say K-9 officers soon came in to help search the banks of the lake to figure out which direction the suspect went.
Talking with victims
While K-9 officers and supervisors searched the banks, YPD spoke with the woman inside the house during the burglary.
She told police she heard loud bangs outside her side door, then saw three masked men coming inside dressed all in black.
Reports say the woman told police one man put a gun to her head before ordering her to put her dog in another room.
The other two men “ransacked” the house, according to the first victim. Reports say she was told to stay in her bedroom.
A second victim inside the house said he was upstairs when the burglary happened. He told police while sitting at his computer. He was hit in the back of the head repeatedly by one of the gunmen.
The gunman demanded that he “open his Exodus crypto account but did not take any money.”
The victim told police the masked man was rushing him and threatening to kill him.
The gunman stole an iPhone and a chain from the second victim before leaving his room and going back downstairs.
Reports say one of the offenders was located by K-9 officers, and the first officer on the scene confirmed it was the same person he saw running away from the home.
He was arrested and taken to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital for medical treatment.
The burglary is under investigation. The offender wasn’t identified in police reports.
